Our Work in India

Strengthening Maternal and Newborn Care

Jhpiego is strengthening maternal and newborn care across India—from rural hamlets to urban neighborhoods—by equipping frontline health workers with the skills, tools, and technology they need to save lives.

  • The Government of India’s nationwide adoption of the Dakshata program reflects this partnership in action. Building on this foundation, next-generation solutions are being introduced using AI and predictive analytics to identify high-risk pregnancies, deploying point-of-care tests to manage complications, and addressing preventable causes of low birth weight. At the same time, services are expanding to integrate maternal nutrition and perinatal mental health, ensuring holistic and respectful care for mothers and families.

Advancing Comprehensive Primary Health Care

Jhpiego is advancing resilient, client-centered primary health systems that deliver integrated and equitable care across the life course.

  • Jhpiego focuses on leveraging digital tools, fostering local innovations, and engaging communities to strengthen workforce capacity, enhance quality and accountability, and build climate-responsive systems.

  • Through learning labs, we co-design solutions with governments and communities, improving intrapartum care in remote districts, increasing contraceptive uptake among youth, and integrating tuberculosis and non-communicable disease services at the primary level. These initiatives are making health systems more responsive to everyday needs while preparing them for future epidemics and climate-related challenges.

Strengthening Tuberculosis and Infectious Disease Response

  • Jhpiego strengthens primary health systems and surveillance for timely action in alignment with the Government of India’s priorities for tuberculosis and infectious diseases. We provide technical support to integrate tuberculosis care with maternal health services, expand preventive therapy through Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, and strengthen differentiated models of care to reduce mortality.

  • Together with partners, we are piloting innovations such as the Cough Syrup Surveillance model to engage informal providers and the Cough Against TB AI model for decentralized care and stronger surveillance.

  • These initiatives enhance access to diagnostics and treatment, embed tuberculosis care within broader health services, and engage families and communities in early detection and treatment completion, while building resilient systems to address both current and emerging health challenges.

Transforming Breast and Cervical Cancer Care

Jhpiego supports an integrated ecosystem for breast and cervical cancer prevention, early detection, timely diagnosis, and treatment, anchored in a strong primary health care approach.

  • We raise awareness through social and behavior change communication, strengthening provider skills, decentralizing diagnostics to bring services closer to communities, and ensuring effective navigation pathways that connect women to quality care.

  • By bringing services closer to communities and expanding access to diagnostics and treatment at the last mile, Jhpiego is helping detect cancers earlier and improve health outcomes for women and families.

  • Progress is also being driven by innovation, with molecular diagnostics, AI-assisted workflows, and digital solutions enhancing efficiency and overcoming barriers. In partnership with governments and cancer care centers, Jhpiego ensures continuity of care while developing financing and market-based solutions to make cancer services more accessible across mixed health systems.

Preventing and Managing Non-Communicable Diseases

Jhpiego advances strategies to prevent, detect, and manage hypertension and diabetes by strengthening primary health systems.

  • Efforts include expanding screening, diagnosis, treatment, and long-term care, while building provider capacity, ensuring essential medicines and supplies, scaling digital innovations, and reinforcing governance.

  • Through learning labs, Jhpiego and government partners are scaling innovations such as gestosis-based risk assessment for preeclampsia and community-led follow-up through Jan Arogya Samitis. These efforts have enabled government-led screening of nearly 98 million people, improving hypertension control from 8% to 24% and diabetes control from 14% to 29% in demonstration geographies.

Reaching More People with Essential Vaccines

Jhipego is strengthening immunization systems to cover the full life course, including adolescent and adult vaccines such as COVID-19, tuberculosis, and HPV.

  • Jhpiego integrates immunization with family planning, maternal health, adolescent health, and other primary care services to reach people where they are. Innovation drives this work—applying AI and machine learning for post-vaccination safety surveillance, AI-driven social media listening for sentiment analysis, skill labs to strengthen provider capacity, and GIS-based private sector mapping.

  • We focus on equity by strengthening urban immunization services and reducing zero-dose cases and missed opportunities for vaccination.

Integrating Nutrition Into Health Services

Jhpiego uses a lifecycle approach to nutrition, addressing undernutrition, anemia, and micronutrient deficiencies while strengthening health systems across India.

  • We use evidence-based interventions that are embedded within maternal and child health programs, with frontline workers trained and supported through supervision and rapid assessments that inform decision-making.

  • We share technical expertise to develop strategic guidelines, foster innovation, and apply AI and machine learning to scale solutions. Together with government and community partners, these efforts are improving data use and advancing community-centered nutrition practices that meet both current and future needs.

Building a Skilled and Supported Health Workforce

Jhpiego supports reforms in pre-service education that embed quality benchmarks in public institutions and address workforce shortages, skill gaps, and uneven distribution.

  • We prioritize leadership development and workforce readiness, ensuring health workers are capable, confident, and responsive to evolving needs.

  • Together with the Government of India, Jhpiego partners with more than 600 institutes nationwide to modernize education through simulation labs, virtual classrooms, and competency certification.

  • Jhpiego has helped establish 15 Midwifery Training Institutes and 13 Midwifery-Led Care Units, training more than 280 midwives through nationally and internationally recognized curricula. Embedded in national and state missions, these initiatives ensure nurses and midwives have the skills, systems, and supportive environments needed to deliver quality care and improve outcomes for mothers, newborns, and families.

Strengthening Preparedness for Emerging Health Threats

Jhpiego is building resilience to address emerging public health threats, from pandemics to local outbreaks.

  • Our efforts focus on enhancing surveillance, building rapid response mechanisms, and integrating services that improve readiness.

  • Jhpiego provides technical support that advances One Health approaches, strengthens laboratory systems, scales disease surveillance, supports antimicrobial resistance containment, and embeds digital intelligence so states can prevent, detect, and respond faster.

  • During COVID-19, partnerships with governments demonstrated the value of rapid diagnostics, decentralized genomics, community-based reporting, and multisector coordination. These investments have since been institutionalized into long-term systems, transforming emergency responses into sustainable public health capacity across India.

Building Climate-Resilient Health Systems

Jhpiego is strengthening health systems to manage the growing risks of climate change by building green and climate-resilient facilities, integrating climate adaptation and mitigation into primary health care, and enhancing surveillance for heat-related illness and air-quality impacts.

  • Together with states, Jhpiego has co-developed action plans, improved data for early warning and response, and embedded climate resilience into everyday service delivery, helping communities stay protected in the face of change.

Expanding Access to Family Planning and Reproductive Health

Jhpiego is accelerate voluntary, rights-based family planning and reproductive health by integrating services into maternal and child health care, strengthening postpartum care, and broadening contraceptive choice.

  • With a focus on equity, our efforts include reducing gender and social barriers, engaging youth, and extending services to underserved communities, ensuring client-centered care for all.

iWIN: Ensuring the Right Level of Care for Every Woman, at the Right Time

Hope, Confidence & New Life in India

What I liked the most was teaching women to do regular self-breast examinations and also giving them the option of collecting their own cervical samples for screening. This gives women a sense of ownership and control of their own health care.
