Improving the quality of maternal and newborn health services in Bangladesh since 1977.

Selected Achievements

  • Jhpiego established a national-level Technical and Advisory Committee for maternal immunization and developed assessment tools to measure health facilities’ readiness for maternal immunizations.

  • With the Obstetrical and Gynecological Society of Bangladesh, we introduced the use of injectable magnesium sulfate for the management of severe pre-eclampsia and eclampsia. This lifesaving intervention has been rolled out to 140 health care facilities.

  • Through Jhpiego’s project strengthening midwifery-led service delivery, midwives at the Arju Moni Maternal and Child Welfare Center have conducted 220 vaginal deliveries.

  • At Dhaka Mohanagar General Hospital, midwifery-led normal vaginal delivery services have been established to serve over 500,000 people, aiming to reduce unnecessary C-sections.

Our Focus

Achieving Universal Access to Sexual and Reproductive Health Care

Despite progress, many women and girls in Bangladesh, especially in Cox’s Bazar, continue to face limited access to quality sexual and reproductive health and gender-based violence services due to gaps in health infrastructure, workforce capacity, and community awareness.

  • Since 2022, with assistance from UNFPA and funding from the World Bank, this project has significantly advanced efforts in advocacy, training at the national level, and raising community awareness about the importance of access to quality sexual and reproductive health and gender-based violence services.

  • Jhpiego is working to improve access to and use of integrated services for sexual and reproductive health, as well as strengthen support for gender-based violence prevention and response in health facilities across districts, sub-districts, and communities.

  • In Cox’s Bazar, Jhpiego has established midwifery-led services that provide essential care such as antenatal services, postnatal care, and 24/7 support for vaginal deliveries at 20 Union Health and Family Welfare Centers. Additionally, support for gender-based violence is available at the District Sadar Hospital and seven Upazila Health Complexes.

  • We strengthen reproductive and maternal health services by building the capacity of health workers and facilities to deliver high-quality care. This included providing hands-on training, mentoring, and supportive supervision around long-acting reversible contraception, permanent methods, maternal and newborn health, and infection prevention and control.

Strengthening Midwifery-led and Sexual and Reproductive Health Care

Access to quality midwifery-led and comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services remains limited in many parts of Bangladesh, leading to gaps in postpartum, post-abortion, and adolescent care.

  • This project strengthens midwifery-led service delivery, expands postpartum family planning and post-abortion care, and enhances facility readiness and community outreach in four targeted districts.

  • Sexual and reproductive health and rights services have been introduced at the Arju Moni Maternal and Child Welfare Center, encompassing antenatal and postnatal care, family planning, and adolescent health.

  • Jhpiego helped secure medical equipment and supplies to improve care delivery. The Dhaka Mohanagar General Hospital is now equipped with robust infrastructure, medical equipment, and effective infection control systems.

Strengthening Urban Health Care

Access to reproductive health services in urban workplace settings is challenging, particularly for underserved populations.

  • Jhpiego engages community pharmacies and expands midwifery-led care to improve visibility, accessibility, and utilization of sexual and reproductive health services in cities such as Bogura and Bagerhat.

  • Through the Komlaphul Pharmacy Initiative, 400 individuals in Bogura and Bagerhat were reached. One-third of participating pharmacists were women and profile lightboxes were installed in 40 pharmacies to enhance visibility and service engagement. Regular monitoring visits ensured the program’s progress and impact.

Immunization Equity

Despite national efforts, many children in Bangladesh remain without immunizations or under-immunized due to gaps in data use, planning, and implementation.

  • The Country Learning Hub for Immunization Equity project generates evidence, fosters learning, and supports data-driven strategies to improve immunization coverage and equity.

  • Funded by Gavi and led by the Dhaka-based international health research institute, icddr,b, this project helps establish Zero Dose Country Learning Hubs aligned with Gavi’s Identify–Reach–Monitor–Measure–Advocate framework. The goal is to improve evidence-based planning by developing strategies based on reliable data, research, and proven practices, rather than assumptions or routine practices, to reach zero-dose and under-immunized children.

  • Jhpiego conducts implementation research, develops learning tools, and created a plan for monitoring and evaluation to meet national goals and communities’ needs.

Mapping Bangladesh’s Surveillance System

Bangladesh's disease surveillance system (a public health tool used to track, report, and respond to diseases, especially outbreaks) faces challenges in coordination, data flow, and coverage, limiting timely detection and response to public health threats.

  • Jhpiego aims to comprehensively map the existing disease surveillance system in Bangladesh, including its structure, coverage, data flow, and operational processes. Mapping this system helps identify how information flows, who is involved, and where gaps exist. By analyzing its structure, coverage, and operational processes, we can pinpoint weaknesses and make informed recommendations to strengthen data tracking, improve early detection, and support faster public health responses.

  • We document both national and subnational challenges and proposes recommendations for strengthening surveillance, ensuring more efficient health data tracking and response mechanisms.
