Prevention to preparedness: Strengthening and building resilient health systems in Lesotho.

Selected Achievements

  • Over 256,000 Basotho men have received VMMC services through Jhpiego projects, thereby benefiting from the procedure’s protective effect against HIV infection.

  • Approximately 83,559 people have been screened for tuberculosis and 1,219 of them were diagnosed and put on treatment.

  • Approximately 600,000 people have been vaccinated against COVID-19 through the RISE project.

  • We pioneered the implementation of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) choice and supported Lesotho’s Ministry of Health in rolling it out across 3 districts. Over 40,000 new clients have been initiated on PrEP.

  • In collaboration with the Aurum Institute, Jhpiego led the Community and Universal Testing for Tuberculosis among Contacts (CUT-TB) study, which measured the effectiveness of universal testing compared to standard tuberculosis screening for detection of tuberculosis among household contacts.

Current Projects

Reducing the burden of tuberculosis

The Stepping Up Universal Access: Tuberculosis (TB) Diagnosis, Care and Treatment project is supported by Lesotho’s Ministry of Finance through The Global Fund. It supports the Lesotho Ministry of Health’s National TB and Leprosy Program to reduce the burden of TB by scaling up TB prevention, diagnosis, and care through a people-centered approach. Through effective TB contact investigation, we are helping to increase TB case notification and treatment coverage countrywide.

  • Contact Tracing and Screening: Over 97% of TB contacts have been successfully traced and screened during the project reporting period.

  • TB Diagnoses: 455 people with TB were identified, 277 bacteriologically confirmed, and 178 clinically diagnosed with 250 males and 205 females among the notified cases.

  • Preventive Therapy: Jhpiego provided TB preventive therapy to 4,816 eligible contacts under 15 years old and 160 inmates and ex-miners with silicosis.

Improving Health Through Integrated Approaches

Reaching Impact Saturation and Epidemic Control (RISE)

  • Reaching Impact Saturation and Epidemic Control (RISE) is a multi-country project funded by the U.S. Government to save lives and improve health through integrated, evidence-based approaches to address urgent gaps in lifesaving services. RISE works across all levels of the health system to strengthen the HIV/TB epidemic response, to limit the spread of deadly disease outbreaks through Global Health Security programming, and to reduce preventable morbidity and mortality through integrated maternal, newborn, and child health, nutrition, tuberculosis, and malaria services. RISE supports country governments to strengthen essential data systems, supply chain and commodity management, human resources for health, domestic resource mobilization, and other cross-cutting health system functions to accelerate transition to country ownership. Since 2019, RISE has supported programs in more than 25 countries across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The program runs through December 2027. Learn more here.
