Selected Achievements

  • We have always collaborated closely with key partners including the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, and Ministry of Women and Social Affairs to align with national priorities.

  • Alongside professional associations, we built local capacity and fostered a coordinated, sustainable approach to improving health outcomes across the country.

  • In collaboration with the Ethiopian Ministry of Women and Social Affairs and the World Bank, Jhpiego worked to enhance the quality and accessibility of gender-based violence services, ensuring that survivors received the support they needed.

  • Jhpiego played a pivotal role in introducing a national licensing examination and developing a program accreditation process for health care education. Capacity building initiatives were implemented for HRH managers and HRH management units, alongside the rollout of an electronic human resource information system. This multifaceted approach also focused on generating valuable research related to HRH.

  • Jhpiego spearheaded the support for the Ministry of Health in strengthening Human Resources for Health (HRH) in Ethiopia. This initiative involved the development of a comprehensive national HRH strategic plan, as well as the creation of policies, directives, and guidelines aimed at enhancing the health workforce. Among the key components of this effort was the scale-up and transformation of health workforce education, which included the establishment of a continuing professional development system to ensure that healthcare professionals receive ongoing training.

  • As a result of these concerted efforts, there has been a significant improvement in the number, quality, and sustainability of Ethiopia’s health workforce. These advancements are essential for delivering quality health care, effectively preventing, detecting, and responding to public health emergencies, and accelerating progress toward universal health coverage.

Our Projects

Improving Gender-Based Violence Services

The Response-Recovery-Resilience for Conflict-Affected Communities in Ethiopia (3R-4-CACE) project aims to improve gender-based violence (GBV) response services in conflict-affected areas.

  • Through data-driven assessments and capacity building for service providers, the 3R-4-CACE project is strengthening care for survivors of gender-based violence.

  • Jhpiego assesses and maps service gaps and provider competencies across 49 woredas (districts) to inform targeted interventions.

  • Jhpiego co-designs training programs with frontline health workers, spanning multiple sectors including health, police, prosecution, and case management.

  • Jhpiego supported the introduction of a multilingual digital quality assurance tool to help institutionalize quality monitoring and service improvement.

Strengthening HIV Testing

The Global Reach II (GRII) project works to strengthen Ethiopia's HIV response by enhancing HIV viral load testing capacity by building the resilience of regional laboratories and their staff.

  • Jhpiego has enhanced operational functionality in 19 HIV viral load testing labs across seven regions by providing capacity building for biomedical and lab staff.

  • Jhpiego supplies essential tools and spare parts to laboratories while establishing preventive maintenance and repair systems to keep equipment functional.

  • The project has achieved two consecutive years of uninterrupted viral load testing services by restoring and maintaining previously non-functional equipment.

Improving Health Through Integrated Approaches

Reaching Impact Saturation and Epidemic Control (RISE)

  • Reaching Impact Saturation and Epidemic Control (RISE) is a multi-country project funded by the U.S. Government to save lives and improve health through integrated, evidence-based approaches to address urgent gaps in lifesaving services. RISE works across all levels of the health system to strengthen the HIV/TB epidemic response, to limit the spread of deadly disease outbreaks through Global Health Security programming, and to reduce preventable morbidity and mortality through integrated maternal, newborn, and child health, nutrition, tuberculosis, and malaria services. RISE supports country governments to strengthen essential data systems, supply chain and commodity management, human resources for health, domestic resource mobilization, and other cross-cutting health system functions to accelerate transition to country ownership. Since 2019, RISE has supported programs in more than 25 countries across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The program runs through December 2027. Learn more here.
