Ni Waongo! Aw Dansé! Fôfô!

With the ministry of health, we're making health care equitable, accessible, and people-centered.

Selected Achievements

  • Jhpiego piloted and introduced cervical cancer prevention services at more than 20 health facilities, integrating these services into other care and adopting the latest screening and treatment technologies. As part of project implementation research, 100% of women received HPV test results, with 17% of women in the general population testing positive compared to 31% of women living with HIV.

  • In 2023, Jhpiego activities contributed to a decrease in the incidence of uncomplicated malaria cases by 15% and severe malaria cases by more than 20%. The number of deaths among children under five also decreased by 20% compared to 2022.

  • As a result of Jhpiego’s research, the Ministry of Health introduced HPV testing in health facilities, along with management of precancerous lesions through thermocoagulation, which they will continue to use at all project intervention sites.

  • As part of the Enhancing Global Health Security project, Jhpiego provided intensive support to the Ministry of Health during a dengue epidemic, including drafting guidelines on how to manage severe cases and training health workers in their application.

Current Projects

Reducing the burden of malaria

  • Funded by the U.S. government, the Integrated Health Services (IHS) Project aims to support the Government of Burkina Faso by contributing to the reduction of the malaria burden and increasing equity in access to quality integrated services for reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health and nutrition. This five-year project is implemented by a consortium of national and international nonprofit organizations and is led by Jhpiego. In collaboration with the Ministry of Health, it covers 19 health districts across three regions (Centre-Est, Centre-Ouest, and Sud-Ouest).

Cervical cancer prevention

  • Funded by Unitaid, the Scale Up Cervical Cancer Elimination with Secondary Prevention Strategy (SUCCESS) Project is implemented by Expertise France, the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), and Jhpiego. This innovative initiative aims to reduce morbidity and mortality from cervical cancer by improving access to diagnostic services in six regions of Burkina Faso.

Health emergency response

  • Since 2020, Jhpiego has been implementing the Enhancing Global Health Security (EGHS) Project in Burkina Faso, funded by the U.S. government. This project aims to contribute to improved health emergency management by strengthening partnerships with the Ministry of Health and building the capacity of more than 3,000 people in rapid and effective responses to health emergencies in the country. Through this initiative, Jhpiego supports the government in planning, deploying, and responding to emergencies through rapid response teams.

"I embraced the self-sampling [for cervical cancer] to avoid the same fatal fate as my late mother, who was a victim of cervical cancer that eventually took her life. Once the disease sets in, treatment becomes heavy and expensive, which is beyond the reach of many women and their families. Thank you for this important work that helps save the lives of women like me."
