Prevention First, Protection Always: Ensuring healthy providers, safer facilities, and stronger communities.

Infections acquired in health facilities affect hundreds of millions of people every year, threatening patients and health workers alike. Jhpiego leads global efforts in infection prevention and control (IPC), outbreak response, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) mitigation. We developed the first modern IPC manual and have worked with more than 40 countries to integrate IPC into their health systems.

Our Global Impact:
• 14,427 health workers have been trained in Ghana, boosting knowledge scores from 44% to 78%.
• Sierra Leone health facilities across the country improved their IPC readiness scores by 28% in one year.
• In Liberia, IPC performance standards rose from 38% to 81% across 298 health facilities
• 5,185 health providers have been trained in Guinea, improving IPC practices during the Ebola crisis.
• In Pakistan, Jhpiego developed a National IPC Program under the leadership of the Pakistan National Institute of Health and we strengthened the National Healthcare-Associated Infection surveillance system.

To achieve these results, Jhpiego aligns with the World Health Organization’s IPC Core Components: standard precautions, surveillance systems, and outbreak preparedness. We strengthen national guidelines and programs, mentor frontline providers, and build resilient health systems. Embedding IPC across essential services is key, so we integrate IPC practices into services for family planning, maternal and newborn care, HIV prevention, cervical cancer screening, and reproductive health.

By empowering health workers and ensuring safer health facilities, Jhpiego helps countries prevent avoidable infections, protect health workers on the front lines, build resilient systems for future outbreaks, and save lives.

OUR APPROACHES

Strengthen Infection Prevention and Control Systems

Jhpiego applies the World Health Organization multimodal strategy for infection prevention and control, fostering lasting culture change through strong governance, improved infrastructure, and supportive supervision.

  • We strengthen governance, leadership, and infrastructure to embed IPC in national systems.

  • We provide training, simulation, and mentorship to equip health workers.

  • We ensure compliance through monitoring, supportive supervision, and data-driven feedback.

  • We promote advocacy, leadership, and best practices to embed IPC in daily routines, protecting patients and providers.

Prevent Healthcare-Associated Infections and Combat Antimicrobial Resistance

Jhpiego strengthens health systems to prevent healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and control antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

  • To strengthen data quality, we establish reporting systems aligned with global standards to track healthcare-associate infections.

  • We improve compliance through supervision and rapid response.

  • We support rational use of antimicrobials through stewardship programs.

  • We link data on healthcare-associated infections, antibiotic use, and antibiotic consumption, to national antimicrobial resistance strategies, thereby reducing infections and protecting health workers.

Implement Water, Sanitation and Hygiene

  • We integrate water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) into infection prevention and control programs to strengthen facility readiness and improve quality of care.

  • We ensure reliable water supply, safe sanitation, and effective waste management systems.

  • We promote hand hygiene, environmental cleaning, and disinfection.

  • We improve facility compliance with infection prevention and control standards and strengthen patient outcomes.

  • We extend WASH and IPC benefits to surrounding communities, building broader resilience and healthier environments.

Prepare for Outbreaks and Build Resilient Systems

  • We embed infection prevention and control into outbreak preparedness to protect both emergency and routine care.

  • We build readiness for Ebola, COVID-19, and other emerging diseases through training, guidelines, and facility support.

  • We ensure alignment with World Health Organization infection prevention and control guidelines and apply core components to maintain continuity of essential health services during crises.

  • We strengthen personal protective equipment availability, waste management, and logistics systems.

  • We safeguard patients and providers while ensuring uninterrupted delivery of safe, high-quality care.

Empower Health Workers and Build Capacity

  • We equip frontline health workers with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to sustain effective infection prevention and control.

  • We deliver practical, simulation-based, and digital learning approaches tailored to local contexts.

  • We provide continuous coaching, peer-to-peer learning, and hub-and-spoke support systems.

  • We reinforce standards through structured monitoring, supportive supervision, and feedback loops.

  • We empower providers to apply precautions, manage outbreaks, and deliver safe, high-quality care in both routine and emergency settings.

  • We strengthen training management through training information management systems.

Promote global leadership

Jhpiego develops national policies, guidelines, and reference and learning materials, including COVID-19 technical resources and reference manuals for health facilities with limited resources.
