Infections acquired in health facilities affect hundreds of millions of people every year, threatening patients and health workers alike. Jhpiego leads global efforts in infection prevention and control (IPC), outbreak response, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) mitigation. We developed the first modern IPC manual and have worked with more than 40 countries to integrate IPC into their health systems.
Our Global Impact:
• 14,427 health workers have been trained in Ghana, boosting knowledge scores from 44% to 78%.
• Sierra Leone health facilities across the country improved their IPC readiness scores by 28% in one year.
• In Liberia, IPC performance standards rose from 38% to 81% across 298 health facilities
• 5,185 health providers have been trained in Guinea, improving IPC practices during the Ebola crisis.
• In Pakistan, Jhpiego developed a National IPC Program under the leadership of the Pakistan National Institute of Health and we strengthened the National Healthcare-Associated Infection surveillance system.
To achieve these results, Jhpiego aligns with the World Health Organization’s IPC Core Components: standard precautions, surveillance systems, and outbreak preparedness. We strengthen national guidelines and programs, mentor frontline providers, and build resilient health systems. Embedding IPC across essential services is key, so we integrate IPC practices into services for family planning, maternal and newborn care, HIV prevention, cervical cancer screening, and reproductive health.
By empowering health workers and ensuring safer health facilities, Jhpiego helps countries prevent avoidable infections, protect health workers on the front lines, build resilient systems for future outbreaks, and save lives.
