Jhpiego and the World Health Organization Launch Comprehensive HIV PrEP Training Course
ByJhpiego Staff
Baltimore, MD – Jhpiego, a global health nonprofit and Johns Hopkins University affiliate, in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), is proud to announce the launch of a new global HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) training course. This digital training suite is designed to equip health workers with the essential tools and knowledge to deliver the full range of WHO-approved PrEP options, including TDF-based oral PrEP, the dapivirine vaginal ring (DVR), long-acting injectable cabotegravir (CAB-LA), and long-acting Lenacapavir (pending WHO recommendation).
Building on nearly two decades of leadership in HIV prevention training and in response to the ever-evolving market, this innovative training course integrates information about all available PrEP methods into a single, user-friendly resource that helps health workers respond to the unique needs of their clients in the communities in which they work.
“The true impact of new PrEP options lies in how quickly and effectively these options reach those who need them most,” said Elizabeth Irungu, Regional Technical Advisor for HIV at Jhpiego. “A key driver of this is health workers who are confident, informed, and ready to counsel clients on the full range of choices available. This comprehensive training platform supports this goal, marking a meaningful step toward scaling up PrEP choice and ensuring that people can access prevention options that align with their needs.”
Jhpiego first partnered with the WHO in 2016 to introduce a foundational digital course on oral PrEP delivery. In 2023, they expanded this work under the USAID-RISE project with a CAB-LA-specific training toolkit.
This latest course marks a major milestone, not only integrating all currently available PrEP methods into a single, user-friendly resource, but allowing for flexible implementation through four self-paced digital lessons and a set of complementary classroom-based materials to equip health workers with up-to-date knowledge on all PrEP options, including Lenacapavir. It includes downloadable job aids, adaptable resources for classroom-based training, and a complementary mobile application for access to WHO guidance and interactive clinical tools.
In addition to this new training toolkit, Jhpiego is leveraging AI to develop an interactive learning tool that is complementary to the course. This tool will give providers access to real-time answers to any questions on PrEP—akin to having a PrEP expert speak to you from your mobile device. This will not only reinforce learning concepts from the course, but will give providers opportunities to access interactive, engaging, multilingual audio-based content. This integration represents a vital step forward in scaling HIV PrEP training, putting timely, trusted knowledge at health workers’ fingertips and a step towards self-care for clients.
This holistic approach not only enhances the availability of effective PrEP options but also ensures affordability and accessibility for all clients. It will be publicly available and free to access starting July 14, 2025, aligning with the WHO’s updated PrEP recommendations and the anticipated release of new guidance on Lenacapavir.
“Jhpiego is proud to collaborate with the WHO on this vital initiative,” said Leslie Mancuso, President and CEO of Jhpiego. “This training course represents a critical advancement for health systems, equipping health workers with practical, evidence-based solutions that will enhance both access to and quality of care, driving sustainable health outcomes across populations.”
