Learning
and Performance

Transforming health worker training investments into sustainable impact.

Improving health worker learning and performance isn’t just training and supervision. It’s so much more. These widely used methods often fail to change behavior or address real-world challenges health workers face.

A multi-country analysis found that combining interventions—like workplace learning, quality improvement, and the use of digital tools—leads to more effective and sustainable results. Digital solutions offer timely, practical support and connect health workers to peers and mentors across distances.

To deliver real impact, we must make learning more responsive, equitable, and impactful. That’s why Jhpiego works with countries to align funding and systems with what works: combining different approaches and integrating technology to help health workers learn and perform.

Our Approach

Helping countries take a smarter approach to health worker learning and performance.

  • Using our Transforming Learning and Performance Toolkit—built from real-world experience in multiple countries—we guide governments, professional associations, and private sector partners through a simple three-step process to make their investments more effective, sustainable, and digitally connected.

Step 1: Understand the reality health workers face.

  • We start with a rapid situational analysis to identify national priorities, existing systems, and the real challenges health workers face. This helps identify gaps and opportunities and ensures that solutions are practical, realistic, and aligned with what already exists, especially in underserved areas.

Step 2: Find the right combinations and integrate sustainable digital solutions.

  • We help partners move from “training only” to “training plus what else?” by combining effective approaches—like mentorship, on-the-job training, and quality improvement—for greater impact. We ensure selected interventions are integrated into national systems and identify ways to embed digital tools that are scalable, cost-effective, and aligned with how health workers prefer to learn and connect.

Step 3: Build systems that evolve with workers’ needs.

  • We help partners develop practical monitoring and evaluation (M&E) plans to track whether chosen interventions lead to real impact. This includes using a vetted set of learning and performance indicators to measure progress and continuously improve results over time.
