Security

Fostering a world where all communities are safeguarded against public health threats.

Health security is society’s ability to protect individuals and communities from health threats—whether naturally occurring, accidental, or deliberate—and to minimize their impact on lives and livelihoods. Strong health security reduces mortality and disruption, safeguards economies and national security, and builds public trust. It enables families and communities to thrive while complementing universal health coverage.

Jhpiego effectively supports countries and communities to prepare for, predict, prevent, detect, respond to, and recover from public health threats, especially among the most vulnerable. We work closely with governments and key stakeholders to ensure that systems are in place and that the health workforce is equipped to address emerging and ongoing threats.

What sets Jhpiego apart is our multi-country expertise in global health security, agility and adaptability in times of crisis, field-driven technical assistance and deep contextual knowledge, and capacity to tailor global solutions to local needs.

Jhpiego ensures that the latest evidence-based approaches are scaled effectively, while also supporting and accelerating innovation to strengthen health systems.

OUR APPROACHES

Disease Surveillance

  • Jhpiego collaborates with governments across Africa and Asia, as well as regionally in South America and West Africa, to develop surveillance systems that promote real-time data utilization. The organization supports the introduction and scale-up of event-based surveillance in countries such as Rwanda and Nigeria. Additionally, Jhpiego strengthens border health by developing strategic plans, building capacity at points of entry, and conducting population mobility assessments.

National Laboratory Systems

  • Timely and accurate laboratory testing is essential for detecting infectious disease outbreaks and other health emergencies. To enhance national laboratory systems, Jhpiego conducts comprehensive assessments and provides support with supplies, equipment, specimen transport, and biosafety/biosecurity training in countries including Burkina Faso, Liberia, Mali, and Pakistan. Jhpiego also contributes to antimicrobial resistance efforts by promoting stewardship and surveillance.

Emergency Response Operations

  • Jhpiego assists governments in operationalizing public health emergency management systems, integrating incident management systems, and supporting public health operations centers in countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), South Africa, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, and Burkina Faso. We offer tailored training for rapid response teams and other emergency responders and support risk communication and community engagement initiatives. Jhpiego has actively deployed teams in response to outbreaks of Mpox, Marburg, Ebola, and other health threats.

Continuation of Essential Health Services

  • To ensure uninterrupted access to essential care during outbreaks, Jhpiego partners with ministries of health and local organizations to maintain services for malaria, HIV, and maternal, newborn, and child health. We emphasize infection prevention and control and implement patient triage strategies to optimize service delivery at health facilities, safeguarding both patients and health workers.
