Throughout her career, she has led strategic and evaluative initiatives that have shaped major global health programs and investments. Notable achievements include revising USAID’s maternal and child health investment frameworks to align with the Sustainable Development Goals, evaluating USAID’s flagship maternal and child health program, and designing a $1 billion successor strategy. She has also held leadership positions at Corus International and Abt Associates, managing global health and economic development portfolios across West Africa, francophone Central Africa, North Africa, and the Middle East. Throughout Indonesia, complications at birth continue to threaten the lives of women and their babies. The number of maternal and newborn deaths in Indonesia remains unacceptably high and, by some indications, has increased. From 2007 to 2012, for example, Indonesia’s estimated maternal mortality ratio increased from 228 to 359 deaths for every 100,000 births.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>These three women, fortunately, survived pregnancy and childbirth with the help of the Expanding Maternal and Neonatal Survival (EMAS) program that was launched by the government of Indonesia through the support of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). EMAS, a program led by Jhpiego, works across the health system from village center to hospital to strengthen business practices, supervision and oversight of health service providers and the skills of individual midwives.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The EMAS program helps train health workers to recognize and manage complicated labors like those Desi and Hamriani experienced. Twice a month, the midwives and nurses at Hamriani’s health center practice emergency drills to ensure that they’re always confident and ready to take action when the need arises. In fact, the very same day that Hamriani arrived at her health center with pre-eclampsia, midwives there had just completed a skill-building session on addressing pregnancy-related high blood pressure and its impact on mother and child. With skills fresh on their minds, the midwives worked together as a team, each managing a different aspect of Hamriani’s difficult labor. Through EMAS, an emergency text message-based referral system was in place, so the staff of the referral hospital was ready with the right blood type for transfusion, key supplies and the necessary intervention for Desi when she arrived.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In Restiani’s case, her newborn son Edgar needed attention. He was taken into intensive care immediately after birth and stabilized. Midwives showed Restiani how to hold him skin-to-skin to transfer body warmth—an intervention called kangaroo mother care, which has been shown to increase a baby’s weight, prevent hypothermia and create a bond between parents and their newborn. Every day, Restiani swaddled Edgar against her chest. Today, they’re both safe and healthy.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>USAID’s EMAS program works in 30 districts and cities, which include 150 hospitals and 300 health centers, to ensure that pregnant women like Hamriani, Desi and Restiani survive childbirth and deliver healthy babies.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>From encouraging expectant mothers to give birth at a health facility to ensuring that health workers have the skills and confidence to manage complicated births, EMAS is helping build bright futures for mothers, newborns and families across Indonesia.\u003C/p>\n","\u003Cp>Three births. Located in Rwanda’s Musanze District in the Northern Province of the country, Musanze is the country’s most mountainous district, and its terrain makes health care access challenging at times. As a dedicated community health worker (CHW), Innocent has supported his neighbours through challenges and triumphs, ensuring that every family has access to malaria prevention and control services close to home.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Throughout his service, one responsibility has always defined his role: being the first line of defence against malaria, an illness caused by parasites spread through mosquito bites, causing fever, chills, and fatigue. This severe illness continues to affect families across the region. In the Musanze District, 14,741 people were diagnosed with malaria out of a population of 510,164. The district includes two high-burden sectors, one of which is Innocent’s region. Rwaza reported significantly elevated incidence rates of 124 cases of malaria per 1,000 people.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In November 2025, Innocent joined fellow CHWs for a district-wide training organized through the Unitaid-funded \u003Ca href=\"https://jhpiego.netlify.app/areas-of-expertise/stop-amdr/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https://jhpiego.netlify.app/areas-of-expertise/stop-amdr/\">Scaling the Optimal Use of Multiple Artemisinin-Based Combination Therapy to Prevent Antimalarial Drug Resistance (STOP-AMDR)\u003C/a> project. More than 1,600 CHWs in the Musanze District completed the training, representing 94.4% of the health workers who were asked to participate.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This training is a key component of Rwanda’s Multiple First Line Treatment (MFT) Strategy, an approach designed to slow the spread of antimalarial drug resistance by rotating three different malaria treatments across designated district blocks each year. Under this strategy, Rwanda is using multiple antimalarial drugs, including ASPY, Dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine (DHAP), and Artemether Lumefantrine (AL), the latter being the standard treatment for uncomplicated malaria for nearly 20 years. Each block will use one assigned treatment for a full year, after which the treatments rotate. This rotation model is more effective in deterring and reducing the risk of antimalarial drug resistance by ensuring no single treatment is used continuously.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>For Innocent, the training was transformative. He strengthened his skills around rapid diagnostic tests and learned how to follow Rwanda’s updated ASPY treatment guidelines. Today, he feels fully equipped to diagnose and treat malaria quickly and safely at the community level, where rapid action matters most.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Not long after the training, Innocent’s new skills were put to the test. A mother called him in panic; her seven-year-old daughter was burning with a high fever. Innocent arrived quickly and performed a rapid diagnostic test, which confirmed that the child had malaria. He immediately administered ASPY and counselled the mother on what symptoms to monitor and when to seek care. Within two days, the child’s fever was gone. By day three, the little girl was back in school, smiling, energetic, and healthy. For Innocent, this moment was powerful proof of what confidence, knowledge, and timely support can achieve.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“This training changed how we fight malaria…with RDTs and ASPY, we treat faster and help protect our medicines from resistance,” said Mwanzarimwabo Innocent.\u003C/p>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Today, Innocent walks through his community with renewed confidence. Thanks to STOP-AMDR and its committed partners, CHWs like Innocent are now equipped with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to stop malaria where it strikes first—at the community level.
